Kindergarteners Visit Whittle Farms...

On Thursday, April 19th, the Kindergarten Class took a field trip to Whittle’s Dairy Farm, near Volga, Iowa.  The kindergarteners had a wonderful day despite the late morning rain.  They were given the opportunity to take a tour of the dairy farm on a hay wagon and got to see where the cows eat and sleep, how the cows are milked, and how the milk makes it from the cow all the way to the tanker!

The students also had the chance to pet baby calves and try to feed one of them food and a bottle. They even got to see a baby calf that was born just an hour before we had arrived on the farm. The calves were really excited to have visitors and wanted to lick us.  Many of us even practiced being dairy farmers by milking a “pretend” cow!

The field trip was a wonderful learning experience. The students also learned that many ingredients are mixed together in a big mixer to make cow food. They were given the opportunity to use their senses and explore the food. We didn’t taste it though, instead we had an ice cream treat! The farmers sent all of our BAK kids home with a coloring book, crayons, stickers and a book mark. The teachers and students at B.A. Kennedy would like to thank all the parent chaperones that were able to make this educational experience run smoothly.
