Thanks to all who supported the recent book fair at Bluff View!  We had a great sale, and I hope that many of your children are happy with their new book purchases.  It was great to see so many B.A. Kennedy faces!  Also, a great big thanks goes out to Brenda Lenzendorf, Katie McCullick, Erin Pederson & Peg Smith for all of their time and help.  It wouldn't have happened without you!

And The Weather Is...

Mr. Zeeh's kindergarten students shared their weather reports today! They had spent time writing about the weather in their journals and then learned about presenting to others. T hey did a great job!  The video clip shows one of his students sharing her report this morning.

Writing... And Proud Of It!

These pictures show a 1st grade student in Mrs. White's classroom who is very proud of his creative writing. Students were writing about an underwater adventure, and needed to incorporate certain words along with their own ideas. This young man's story is also pictured. The 1st graders are working hard to become good readers and writers!

Everyday Math Update

We had a great few hours with a representative from Everyday Math yesterday. This woman was very knowledgeable, and taught the program herself for many years. As I was spending some time in Mrs. Mink's 1st grade classroom this morning, she was explaining to the students that she is learning the importance of being able to talk about math and the way that we solve problems. One of her students had just completed a make up math test, and had done a very nice job of explaining a time question.  Mrs. Mink had this student model for the entire class the process in which she found her answer.  You can see this process in the short video clip below. I will keep the blog updated on the district's decision regarding a new math curriculum.

Fun in Kindergarten...

It's been a great morning at B.A. Kennedy! I got to spend some time in Mrs. Ashbacher's kindergarten classroom, and would like to share some of the great learning that I observed today. I hope you enjoy the video clips and photo in this post. These are from our reading breakout groups, and resemble what reading breakout groups look like throughout our kindergarten classrooms each day. It sheds good light on the amazing reading skills that our kindergarten students are developing!

This video clip shows kindergarten students reviewing their Jolly Phonics (http://jollylearning.co.uk/) sounds in the large group setting. Many of these sounds are what we call "tricky sounds." As you can see, Mrs. Ashbacher is leading the sound review from the smartboard while the students respond orally.

This video clip shows students practicing new words that incorporate their Jolly Phonics sounds, also in the large group setting. As you can see, students do a very nice job with these words as well!
This clip was taken during our small group reading breakouts. Mrs. Schneider, one of our teaching assistants, is working with students on vocabulary words. This is a game-like setting where students get to keep the cards if they get the words correct.

This photo shows another small group station in Mrs. Ashbacher's room. These students are working on Compass Learning (https://www.thelearningodyssey.com/). The students do a very nice job of navigating throughout their various activities!

This video shows Mrs. Ashbacher working with a small group of students. Yesterday, the students went through this story and circled their sight words (words that need to be memorized, not sounded out phonetically) as well as their blends (blends help with fluency [reading speed] --- as students learn sounds that are frequently blended together, they are able to improve upon their reading speed).
Today, these students are reading each page of the story as a small group, and then an individual reads as well.

As a 4K through 4th grade staff, we are exploring the Everyday Math curriculum as a possible replacement for our current math curriculum. There is a parent site that gives some information, if anyone is interested in taking a look at what it has to offer!
