Reading Recovery...

Here are some photos from my Reading Recovery observation today. You will see the detailed notes that Mrs. Ashbacher takes as the Reading Recovery teacher!

One of the components of Reading Recovery is working on quick response time.  Here you will see John quickly sort magnetic letters into groups.

Writing is another component of the Reading Recovery program.  John developed his sentence, and in this video you see him working to put the sentence in his journal.  Mrs. Ashbacher is keeping track of the words that he knows without help, and also prompts him to practice words that may be tricky.

After John got his sentence written in his journal, Mrs. Ashbacher wrote the sentence on a sentence strip, cut each word out individually, and John had to rearrange.

B.A. Kennedy is very fortunate to have the Reading Recovery program!

There have been some questions about the B.A. Kennedy Winter Concert date for kindergarten & 1st grade students.  The concert date is Thursday, December 12th, 2013 at 5:30pm.  This is an exciting night for our students, so we hope to see you all there! 1st Grade Hospital Visit

1st grade students got to take a trip to the new hospital building site last week! This was a very special trip arranged by Mrs. Mink. 1st grade students have been learning about building in their current reading unit, so it was super exciting for students to see some of their vocabulary words and other learning in action!

A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Mink for coordinating, Sasha Dull from Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, and Tyler from Market and Johnson for a great morning at the new hospital site!

Great Things from Today...

DSC03634.JPG
Tucker demonstrated bravery and responsibility in the lunchroom today! We had a spill by the garbage can, and there was a milk carton and green beans on the floor that everyone was walking around.  Mrs. Mink asked all students to please come forward if they had made the mess on accident so she could help them to clean it up.  Tucker came forward, and he and Mrs. Mink worked to clean things up.  What a brave and responsible example to set for the whole 1st grade!!

These gentlemen were great listeners at the Fire Prevention presentation this morning.  Upon returning to the room, they continued to have a fire school together, which included discussions about proper procedures should there be a fire, reading through their newly acquired material from our local firefighters, and working together to have some great, productive conversation that all were encouraged to be a part of! Nice work, boys!

This ended with our local police officers dropping off sets of packer cards in recognition of the great leadership shown today at BAK! These young gentlemen were very excited to be the lucky recipients! Thanks to our local police department for providing this opportunity for us to work together to recognize the great things in our schools!
