Breakfast...

This is just a reminder that when there are 2 hour late starts, breakfast is not available to students.  We had many students asking about breakfast today, and we are hopeful that they are getting breakfast elsewhere on these mornings when weather prevents us from starting school on time.

Thank you for your help with this!

2 hours late...

We are running 2 hours late this morning due to drifting.

Why I have the greatest job in the world...

Comments like this from our young students are great reminders of why our jobs in education are the greatest in the world!!
The following exchange was shared with me by Jann Sturmer, mother of 4K student Laura Sturmer.

Jann, "Honey, if you are having problems with a girl at school you can talk to me or Mrs. LaHaie."
Laura, "Nah... I can just talk to the queen."
Jann, "Who is the queen?"
Laura, "Mrs. Stuckey!"

As educators, we have the pleasure of hearing these great comments each and every day.
As I said above... a great reminder of why we have the best job in the world.

We Love Food 4 Thought...

Last Friday, our Food 4 Thought of the month was about dairy products.  Jake Wedeburg visited our school as a representative from his family farm and Organic Valley.  The students had a great time with the hands on activities that were planned.  We love Food 4 Thought!!

Snow Emergency in PdC...

(Prairie Du Chien, WI – March 4th 2013) – Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer has declared a snow emergency, effective from 12:01 AM Tuesday March 5th to 6 PM Wednesday March 6th.
Motorists are asked to NOT park on city streets during this time, as city workers work to plow our streets.

* Vehicles that remain on the streets risk being ticketed and towed. We thank everyone for their cooperation.

* Citizens that do not have off street parking are allowed to park in City Lots throughout the City to assist with the plowing of the roads.  We will not enforce alternate side in the City Lots during the Snow Emergency.

* Downtown residents and patrons are being asked to park in the city lots throughout the downtown, and avoid parking on Blackhawk Avenue during the snow emergency.

* Residents are also being asked to remove all dumpsters, garbage cans and other items from city alleys.

The Cat in the Hat...

The Cat in the Hat visited B.A. Kennedy on Thursday!  A special thanks to Mrs. Frommelt, who taught kindergarten for many years, for being our own special Cat in the Hat!!  All grades got to hear a great Dr. Seuss story.
Kindergarten and 1st grade students also received their RIF books.  RIF stands for Reading is Fundamental.  We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to provide books to our students for their home libraries.

What a Great BAK Team!

Our students worked hard together during afternoon recess this week to build a big snow fort. The pictures below show this great team effort.  The staff out at recess were impressed that the 4K, Kindergarten and 1st graders were all able to work together to do this.  There was no one doing anything else on the playground!!

Way to go, BAK students!

Story Time...

Here are some great ways to spend time with your child while helping him/her to build reading skills and learn to love books.

  • READ REGULARLY.  Reading for 10-15 minutes at bedtime each night makes for a peaceful end to the day.  Other ideas to sneak in 10-15 minutes of reading are while dinner is in the oven or right when you get home from work.
  • TAKE TURNS CHOOSING BOOKS.  Your child may want to hear old favorites again and again.  Use your turn for new titles and variety (nonfiction, poetry, etc.).
  • LET YOUR CHILD PARTICIPATE.  Ask your child to turn the pages while you read.  Also, he/she can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words he/she knows.  Go slowly so your child has time to understand the story and look at the illustrations.  Read-alouds will be more fun for children if they play an active role.
  • BE PLAYFUL.  You can use different voices for different characters (a high, squeaky voice for a chicken, or a deep, booming voice for a horse).  Substitute your youngster's name for the main character's name, or use family members' names for other characters.  Remember - you don't have to be an expert reader.  Your child will love it when you read aloud to him/her because it's you!

A Language-Rich Home

Strong language skills make children better readers, writers, and all-around students.  You can build these skills by just talking to your child!  Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Narrate everyday activities like driving or cooking.  Simply hearing unfamiliar words in conversation will help your child understand words in books.  If the words are unknown, explain to your child what they are and how they work.
  • Encourage your child to join in family conversations.  Ask him/her questions to help expand on the answers given (examples: "Why do you think so?" "What else happened?")  This helps children to learn to talk about events and give opinions.
